He graduated from Richmond Academy in Augusta, Georgia. After graduation, he moved to Montgomery, Alabama, and attended Alabama State University. He joined the Army in 1991 and was honorably discharged after serving in Desert Storm. During his professional career, he worked as a correctional officer with the Alabama Department of Corrections, completing 22 years of service and medically retiring in the early 2000s.
During Tony’s formative years, he was baptized at Springhill Baptist Church in Augusta, Georgia.
Tony volunteered at the Montgomery Boys group home and True Divine Backpack program. His greatest joy was the life he shared with his family and friends. The apple of his eye was his grandson, Nolan Ryan Brooks.
Tony suffered from kidney renal failure which was diagnosed in early 2005. He received a kidney transplant in 2019 through University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital. Tony never complained but shared laughter and jokes with all. On Saturday, December 16, 2023, God called Tony home to join his beloved wife, Rita, which happened to be her birthday.
Ned is now reunited with his beloved wife, Rita; his son, Trenton Smith; and his parents, Ned Smith III and Bessie Carr Smith. He leaves behind to cherish his memory two daughters, Taylor Smith of Columbus Georgia, and Madison Smith of Houston, Texas; four sisters, Debra Smith of Grand Prairie, Texas, Ronda Smith of Augusta, Georgia, Caroline (Carlton) McCray of Augusta, Georgia, Tracy (Russell) German-Burke; grandson, Nolan Ryan Brooks; two uncles, Bennie (Laura) Smith and Herbert Smith of Montgomery, Alabama; four aunts, Annette Simmons of Chicago, Illinois, Charlotte (Donald) Wallace of Jonesboro, Georgia, Mary Newton and Margaret Ross of Augusta, Georgia; a host of loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great nephews; long-time friend, Kevin Forman of Atlanta, Georgia; and a host of loving relatives, dear friends, and co-workers.
