Nathan Wayne Simms, 82, a long-time resident of Montgomery, AL, died September 16, 2013, at home, after an extended illness. His Memorial Service will be on Wednesday, September 18, 2013, at noon. The family will receive friends at First United Methodist Church one hour prior to the service in the Fellowship Hall. He is survived by his wife, Charlsie Taylor Simms; four children, Anne Simms, Wayne Simms, Jr. (Melissa), Denise Blake Greene, Dr. Rett Blake (Dr. Melanie); five grandchildren, Leah Simms, Mary Helen and Sarah Greene and Katie and Nathan Blake; and his brother, Louie Simms (Loretta). Originally from Huntsville, AL, he was a leader for all seasons. He served in the US Navy. His influence helped shape the culture of New York Life during his 53- year career. As General Manager of the Montgomery General Office of NYL, he received the Chairman's trophy-the highest award in his field. He was an avid member of Rotary International, always exemplifying their motto, "Service Above Self." He served as President of the Montgomery Rotary Club and District Governor; he also received the Lifetime Achievement Award and the District's Citation for Meritorious Service to the Foundation. He served as Head Coach of the Montgomery Quarterback Club and was an active volunteer with United Way and a patron of the Houghton Library at Huntingdon College. He was a true athlete and spent his mornings playing basketball at the Southeast YMCA and served on their board for many years. He was awarded Father of the Year by Boy Scouts of America Troop 15. Those who knew him will remember his great sense of humor, compassion for humanity, laughter, service to his community, joy of his children and grandchildren, and love of the Holy Scripture.
