ROEMER, Mary Elizabeth Parmer, 89, a resident of Montgomery, Alabama, died Monday, January 7, 2013. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church with Father Patrick R. Driscoll, Father Matthew Sindik, and Father Augustine Puthanpura celebrating. She was a devout member of St. Peter Catholic Church.
Mary was born in West Lafayette, Indiana and grew up in Hyde Park on Chicago's South Side. She graduated from St. Thomas the Apostle High School in Hyde Park, Chicago, in 1941. She received her B.A. from Rosary College (now Dominican University) in River Forest, Illinois, with a major in English Literature and minors in History and Latin in June 1944 as part of the class of 1945.
She attended the University of Chicago Law School where she was on the Law Review and received her J.D. in 1947.
She was a law clerk for Alabama Supreme Court Justice John L. Goodman from January to June 1955. During the time she reared her children, she practiced law part time as a partner in Roemer & Roemer, Attorneys, from 1955 to 1976.
In addition to being an occasional substitute teacher at Our Lady Queen of Mercy Elementary School, she taught Latin for one spring semester at Catholic High School and then taught Latin at St. James School for the 1972/1973 and 1973/1974 school years. Returning full time to the law, she worked as an attorney for Alabama Legal Services System from June of 1976 to March of 1980.
Next she worked for the Social Security Administration, Office of Hearings and Appeals, from 1980 until her retirement in March of 1998.
She was a member of the Montgomery Country Club, League of Women Voters, the 20th Century Club, and a past President and past Treasurer of St. Anne's Guild at St. Peter Roman Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents John Forest Parmer and Christine Meyer Parmer; by her devoted husband, Albert L. Roemer, and siblings John C. Parmer and Sara Parmer Faems. Her five children survive her, Francis J. Roemer (Yihong) of Montgomery, Alabama; John F. Roemer of Summit, New Jersey; Mary Christine Roemer (Susan Robinson) of Atlanta, Georgia; James W. Roemer of Washington, D.C.; and Catherine R. Nielsen (David) of Reston, Virginia, her five grandchildren: James F. Roemer of Birmingham, Alabama; Sarah and Anna Nielsen of Reston, Virginia; and Nora and Magdalene Roemer of Summit, New Jersey. Her sister Jeanne (Jill) Danelski (David), and brother Jerome (Jerry) Parmer and twenty-three nieces and nephews also survive.
Pallbearers are James F. Roemer, William H. Mastin, James Parmer, Raymond Parmer, Craig Butler, Gene Smith, Trent Green, and Dick Hodges. Honorary pallbearers are John Morton and Philip Jacobs.
Visitation will be held at Leak-Memory Chapel on Friday, January 11, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Leak-Memory Chapel Directing.
