Mary Allen Weaver Meadows, 81, a resident of Lowndesboro, AL, passed away on Friday, July 29, 2022. Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, August 4, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at the Lowndesboro United Methodist Church with Reverend Ray Wells and Reverend Dr. Billy T. Lowe officiating. The family will receive visitors at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Oakview Cemetery in Lowndesboro, with Leak Memory Chapel directing.
Mary Allen is survived by a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Meadows Rosser, and her husband, Joe Sanford Rosser, Jr. of Lowndesboro, AL, and twin sons, Payne Ransom Meadows, and his wife, Jennifer Langford Meadows, and Howard Weaver Meadows, and his wife, Janice Allen Meadows, all of Greenville, AL. Survivors also include five grandchildren, Meadows Madden Rosser, Mary Virginia Meadows, Caroline Leary Meadows, Kathleen Langford Meadows, and Sarah Allen Meadows.
She is preceded in death by her husband of nearly 44 years, Howard Payne Meadows, and grandson, Joe Sanford Rosser, III.
Mary Allen was born in Brewton, AL, November 28, 1940, and was the only child of Edward Judson and Mary Thomas Weaver. She had a wonderful childhood in Brewton where she developed a love for music and excelled at playing the piano. She was a majorette for the T. R. Miller High School Marching Band and was named valedictorian of the class of 1959. She was a 1963 honors graduate of Huntingdon College and received a Master’s degree in 1968 from the University of Alabama.
Mary Allen’s professional career included teaching positions with the Brewton City School System, Murphy High School in Mobile, AL, Lanier High School in Montgomery, AL, and Huntingdon College in Montgomery, AL. Mary Allen married Payne in 1968, and they moved to Payne’s hometown of Lowndesboro in1976, where she was an invaluable partner in their cattle and row crop operations. She was a member of the Lowndesboro United Methodist Church, serving as trustee and pianist for many years. She took great interest in the history of Lowndesboro, serving as a dedicated member of the Landmarks Foundation and the Heritage Society and assisting in the organizing and hosting of the annual Lowndesboro Pilgrimage. Mary Allen worked for many years contributing to the research and writing of a new book on the history of Lowndesboro. A devoted wife, mother, and friend, her greatest joy was serving and supporting her family.
