Mamie Ruth Mills Sellers died peacefully in her sleep on November 8, 2024. She was 95 years old. Mamie was born to Womac M. Mills and Hattie Mae Johnson Mills on November 26, 1928, in Dublin, Alabama. In 1949, she graduated from the Alabama Polytechnic Institute, now known as Auburn University, with a B.S. degree in Foods and Nutrition in the School of Home Economics. Following graduation, Mamie worked as an Assistant Dietitian at Macon Hospital in 1949. During her time at Alabama Polytechnic, she went to a Christmas party in Tuscaloosa with her best friend Tommye Jean. It was there she was introduced to Ronald Earl Sellers, Jr., the man she would marry on February 11, 1950.
If there was one thing to say about Mamie, it was that she lived to serve others. She was dedicated to her husband, her children, and her community. As a military wife, she followed her husband on his assignments as she raised her three sons. She was very active in the communities where they were stationed, involved in the church and schools her sons attended. After 31 years in the military, her husband retired and they settled in Montgomery, AL. After her husband experienced a massive heart attack in 1970, she cared for him and his various health needs until his death in 2002. They were married for 52 years.
As a widow, she became even more dedicated to those in her community. She was an active member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, dedicated her time to various charitable organizations, was an avid patron of the arts, and lived to make her community a better place. She was a very generous philanthropist. In 2011, she was recognized by the Montgomery Area Council on Aging as a Senior of Achievement. In 2023, she was honored as the Philanthropist of the Year from the Women’s Philanthropy Board at Auburn University after she established the first endowment scholarship fund, hoping to inspire future generations of philanthropists.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Col. Ronald Sellers, Jr., and her son, Ronald Sellers, III. She is survived by her sons, Thomas (Karen) Sellers and James (Katheryn) Sellers, and 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Colonel Ronald and Mamie Mills Sellers Women’s Philanthropy Board Endowed Fund for Excellence in the College of Human Sciences through the Auburn University Foundation, PO Box 3140, Auburn, AL 36831-3140 or online at https://AuburnGiving.org/MSellersMemorial, or, as a person who truly believed to give to causes you believe in, please donate in her honor to any charity you want to support.
A celebration of life memorial service will be held on November 27, 2024, in the chapel at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 6610 Vaughn Rd, Montgomery, AL. 36116. There will be a brief visitation at 12:30 pm, followed by a service at 1 pm, and a small reception for family and friends at the end.
