Loyd Smilie

Loyd Devaughn Smilie died October 9, 2023. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 14, 2023, with visitation at 1:15, in the sanctuary of Whitfield United Methodist Church, 2673 Fisk Road, Montgomery, AL, with the Rev. Kathy Fisher and the Rev. Lynn Smilie Nesbitt officiating.

He was born in August of 1929 to Lester and Wilmer May Smilie in Smilietown, South Montgomery County. He was a lifelong Methodist. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his great-granddaughter Amelia Claire Kottyan. Surviving are his wife Mary Emma Sellers Smilie whom he married June 14, 1953, in Ramer, Al; his children Lynn Smilie Nesbitt, Lucinda Smilie Chappelle (Lewis Calvin “Chip”), and Mary Loyd Bush; grandchildren Leah Nesbitt Kottyan (Kameron Mogadam) and David Gilbert Nesbitt (Katie); great-grandchildren Isabelle Claire Kottyan, Ian Michael Kottyan, Mary Emma Nesbitt, and Elizabeth Katherine “Elsie” Nesbitt; and brother-in-law Gilbert Sellers, Jr. (Ethel).

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hills Chapel Cemetery Association, c/o Chris Berry, 15042 Meriwether Trail, Ramer, AL 36069; Huntingdon College, Loyd D. Smilie Scholarship Fund, 1500 E. Fairview Avenue, Montgomery, AL 36106; or the charity of your choice.
