Josephine Thelma Shipp

Josephine (Jo) Crowe Shipp, passed away on May 5, 2023 at the age of 90 in Roanoke, VA, where she had resided for the past 5 years. Jo moved to Roanoke from Montgomery, AL, in 2018 to be closer to her family. Born in Richmond, VA, Jo graduated from Norview High School in Norfolk, VA. Jo moved many times with her family: Norfolk, VA, Park Forest, IL, Miami, FL, Brewster, NY, and Montgomery, AL, with her devoted husband of 50 years, Stanley Shipp. Jo had a gift for connecting with people and was always surrounded by many friends wherever she lived.

Jo loved traveling the United States and the world. She was an avid bridge player and never passed up an opportunity for a good bridge game. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi for 57 years and PEO-Professional Education Organization, and a long- time member of First United Methodist Church in Montgomery, AL.

She was preceded by her husband of 50 years, Stanley E. Shipp, mother Grace Crowe Tebault of Bowling Green, VA, father James Lipscomb, Sr. of Richmond, VA, and brother Arthur D. Granger III. Jo was a loving and supportive wife, mother, nanny, and great-nanny. Left to cherish her memory are her sister Carol L. Pfister; three children, Marcia Sutton (Bob); Karen Strickland (Bob) and Stanley Shipp Jr. (Melanie), eleven grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, May 10 at Leak Memory Chapel. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 prior to the service. Graveside services at Greenwood Memorial Cemetery both in Montgomery, AL. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Good Samaritan Hospice, 2408 Electric Road, Roanoke, VA 24018.
