He was born November 12, 1931, son of Henry Lee and Cora Laws Hurley. He was married to and is survived by the love of his life for 72 years, his wife Betty Jean Schuffert Hurley.
He retired as a Colonel from the fulltime Alabama Army National Guard, which he proudly served for 41 years. He was devoted to his local church, Eastern Hills Baptist Church which he loved attending until his health finally restricted his attendance.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Jack and Jim, sisters Nell Smith and Louise Abernathy and numerous surviving cousins, nephews, and nieces.
We celebrate his life as we mourn with his children Pamela Hurley Dotson (Jerry) and Joseph Virgil Hurley, Jr. (Denise); his grandchildren, Kayley Dotson and Jenni Hurley Koerner (Scott); and his great-grandchildren, Anna Marie and Andrew Koerner.
The family wishes to thank the caregivers from Home Care Assistance and the care given from the Southern Care New Beacon group.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Eastern Hills Baptist Church.
Honorary Pallbearers will be past and present Hurley Sunday school class members.
We will always remember his joy, his laughter, his smile, and the twinkle in his eye.
