Jane was born on August 25, 1935 in Tallahassee, Florida. After graduating from Lanier High School in 1953, she attended the University of Alabama and later graduated from Auburn University (Montgomery) with a BS in Elementary Education (1974) and a Masters of Education (1982). She was especially proud of her higher education and of the many years afterwards spent teaching elementary school. Jane loved her students and seeing them succeed in life, beaming with pride whenever she would run into an old student years later.
Jane was a lifetime member of Dexter Avenue United Methodist Church keeping the nursery for many years. She enjoyed in-depth Bible study classes, completing the entire Disciple series.
She was extremely quick-witted. She kept those around her laughing even as Alzheimer's consumed her. She loved Frank Sinatra and would argue with her mother over whether he or Dean Martin were the better crooner. She was a proud and proper woman but was not afraid to let loose and dance and be silly. She loved her children and grandchildren, and would have loved to get to know her great-grandchildren if her condition was better.
Jane was preceded in death by her parents, James Braxton and Anna Louise Daniel Mott; her brother and sister-in-law, James Crews and Betsy Smith Mott; and her nephew, Robert Lee Mott.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Joe Wheeler III and Karen Jackson O’Neal; daughter, Emily O’Neal Kendall (John Daniels); grandchildren, Kelley O’Neal Heck (William Donald), Alexander Jackson O’Neal, and Paul Benjamin Kendall (fiancée Katie Rae Milliken); great-grandchildren Foster Alan Heck and Robert Theodore Heck; and special friend and caregiver, Gloria Ann Allen.
