James Thomas Ayers, Sr. of Montgomery, (August 18, 1932) after a short illness, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at his home on June 23, 2022. A longtime resident of Montgomery, AL he was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Anne Ruzic Ayers, his parents Wayne and Ruby Ayers of Robbinsville, NC and brothers Maurice Ayers and Melvin Ayers and sister Evelyn Ayers Mathis.
He is survived by his son, James Thomas Ayers, Jr. and his wife Jennifer and their children Aaron Jacob Ayers (Nadia), Hollie Rogers (Darson) and Jessie Ingram . Also his daughter Cynthia Ayers Sahlie and her husband Clark and their children William Clark Sahlie (Katie) and Lee Ayers Sahlie. He is also survived by sisters, Ann Ayers Turner and Imogene Ayers Stiles.
He served in the reserve while attending college and became an active officer in the United States Air Force in 1952. During his career he had extensive military training and numerous decorations as he served in the Korean War and Vietnam as a C-130 Navigator and retired in 1972 as a major. His family then made Montgomery their home. From 1973 until 2003 he was employed with the United States Postal Service.
Graveside funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 28 at 11:00 a.m. at the Old Demopolis Cemetery.
