He was 91 years old, born May 22, 1923 in Bay Springs, FL. Mr. Beck was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He enlisted in the Army in July 1940, entered combat in December 1942 in North Africa, and participated in seven major war campaigns as a Tank Commander and platoon sergeant in Tunisia, Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe. His last position in the Army was at Fort Hood, TX where he was the command sergeant major of the 2nd Armored Division when he retired in 1966. After retiring from the Army, he was in charge of construction for Lowder Associates in Montgomery, AL from 1966 to 1982 and was responsible for building apartment complexes, shopping centers, and hundreds of homes in Montgomery and surrounding cities.
Mr. Beck was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Mildred Louise Beck.
Survivors in the local area include his daughter Marilyn Heitkamp of Montgomery, AL and son-in-law, Kenneth B. Heitkamp of Montgomery, AL; and a nephew Dwight Stewart of Alexander City, AL.
Visitation will take place June 12, 2014, at 1:00 PM at Alabama Heritage Funeral Home in Montgomery, AL with funeral services immediately following in the chapel at 2:00 PM. Burial will follow at the Alabama Heritage Cemetery with full military honors.
