Henry Harold Adair, age 93, of Montgomery, Alabama died December 7, 2023. Henry was born on June 17, 1930, in Chambers County, AL, son of the late Virgil and Jessie Adair. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 15, 2023 at 12:00 pm at Aldersgate United Methodist Church on Vaughn Rd with Reverend Misty Barrett and Reverend Luke Finkelstein officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. A visitation will be held in the church parlor prior to the service at 10 am.
Henry graduated from Auburn University with a B.A. and M.A. degrees in education and completed postgraduate doctorate studies. He was employed with the Montgomery County Public Schools from 1955 until his retirement in 1986. He began his career as a math and science teacher at Cloverdale Junior High and soon moved to principal of Capital Heights Elementary. He served as assistant principal and principal of Sidney Lanier High School for over 11 years. In 1972, Henry became associate superintendent and was later appointed as superintendent of Montgomery County Public Schools until his retirement. One of Henry’s greatest joys was spending time with his family and grandchildren, attending their games and school events. He was a dedicated member of Aldersgate United Methodist for almost 70 years with a commitment to serving others and cherished his enduring friendships. He took great pride in his former students and colleagues, often running into them when out in the community.
Henry was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years Sue Pinckard, his grandson David Adair and a sister Sara Denney.
He is survived by his son, Hal Adair (Donna) of Jefferson, GA; three daughters, Jane Finkelstein (Luke) of Titus, AL, Terri Lynn Weikert (Billy) of Port St. Lucie, FL and Susan Melians (Kaz) of Palm City, FL; sisters, Nancy Noyes-Wollinger of Homosassa, FL and Catherine Pearson of Wadley, AL; close friend Glenda Page of Montgomery, AL; seven grandchildren, Charlie Adair (Sally), Ashley Williams (Brian), Tyler Finkelstein, Lacey Dodwell (Richard), Clay Finkelstein (Rachel), Gavin Melians, Miranda Melians and nine great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Charlie Adair, Tyler Finkelstein, Clay Finkelstein, Gavin Melians, Richard Dodwell, and Brian Williams. Honorary pallbearers will be the Pathfinders/New Creation Sunday School Class of Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
Gifts in lieu of flowers may be made in Henry’s memory to Aldersgate United Methodist Church or to the American Heart Association.
