Born February 17, 1937 at Fitts Hill Hospital in Montgomery, AL to his parents Leon Emmett Sport and Ruth Wilson Sport. He graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in 1955, a
graduate of Auburn University in 1960 and the School of Banking at Louisiana State University in 1970. Mr. Sport was employed beginning in1961 at First National Bank of Montgomery, in 1976 with Alabama National Bank and retired in 1995 as Senior Vice President of AmSouth Bank. After retirement he became employed in 1995 with the Alabama Housing Finance Authority and retired from there in September of 2011 as Multi-Family Administrator.
He married Judith Margaret Slay on August 15, 1959 and they had their children Leigh Sport Huff (Jeff Huff) and Haywood Mal Sport, Jr. (Leslie Sport), grandchildren Jordan Huff McAdams, Donald Slay Huff, Gregory Mal Sport and Sara Ann Sport great grandchildren Mary Leighton McAdams, Susan Elliott McAdams, Samuel Haywood McAdams, Cynthia Sloane Huff, Elzie Alana Sport and Hazel Joy Sport. He was a member of First Baptist Church; Deacon, usher, prayer warrior and member of the Poundstone Sunday School Class, Past President of the Montgomery Lions Club, Vice Chairman and Chairman of St. Margaret’s Foundation serving the frail and elderly. He was also active in Dixie Youth Baseball. He was very proud of his family, his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Some of his most happy memories were autumn afternoons following the Auburn Tiger football games with Judy. He enjoyed golf and tennis and following all Auburn sports. He had a favorite companion, Emma, a black and tan dachshund. His most rewarding job was ushering at First Baptist Church on Sunday mornings and ushering for the Living Christmas Tree for 31 years. Pallbearers will be Greg Sport, Slay Huff, Fred Setzer, Ronnie Winn, John Haigler, Ed Roach, Cecil Spear, Marlan Dyess, Matt McAdams, Les Pittman and Greg Pittman. Honorary Pallbearers are the Poundstone Sunday School class. Presiding over the funeral will be Pastor Jay Wolfe. Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 7, 2023 at First Baptist Church at 12:00 pm. Visitation will be from 11:00 am until 12:00 pm. A private family graveside will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. The family would also like to say a heartfelt thank you to Gabbie’s Residential Caregivers and Gentiva Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church and the Parkinson Foundation in memory of Haywood Sport and will be appreciated by the family. Leak Memory Chapel directing.
