Mrs. Jack N. Reed, of Montgomery passed away Friday evening the 30th of August. Mrs. Reed was born Gloria Joy Barton in Durant, Oklahoma December 10, 1935, the daughter of Lon Barton and the former N. Mae Roper. Mrs. Reed attended Cushing High School in Cushing, OK and was a concert violinist at Oklahoma A&M in Stillwater, OK. It was there that she met her husband of 58 years, Jack Reed, an Air Force officer from Sitka, AK. The couple was married on May 29, 1955, in Cushing, given in marriage by her step-father, Mr. Louis V. Corporon.
The couple lived in France, Florida, Michigan, Nebraska, and Illinois before settling in Montgomery in1974, where Mrs. Reed was a homemaker and painted portraits and landscapes professionally. She was an active member of Whitfield UMC where she sang in the choir and with the Merry Elders who entertained in several local nursing homes for many years. She recently joined the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Mrs. Reed is survived by her husband, a sister, Mrs. Shirley (Kenneth) Brian of Seminole, AL, a daughter, Mrs. Laura (Russell) Peterson of Harvest, AL; two sons, Edwin L. (Jane) Reed of Wetumpka, AL, and Lt. Col Richard A. (Kathy) Reed of Guntersville, AL; and two grandchildren, Nathan W. (Hannah) Reed of Nashville, TN and Ms. Rebecca Reed of Silver Spring, MD. She is pre-deceased by her sister, Mrs. Betty (Lloyd) Slater, her parents and her stepfather.
Visitation will be Wednesday, September 4th, 10:00am at Whitfield UMC with service to follow at 11:00AM.
