George Ernest Mitchell, our precious Dad and Papa, age 95, passed away on Monday, March 20, 2023. He was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada in 1927 and was one of 14 children. His parents were John William Mitchell and Evangeline Wonnacott Mitchell. George served in the United States Air Force from 1951-1955. He was nationalized as an American citizen in June of 1955. He started a career in broadcasting where he began as a radio DJ in both Selma, Alabama and Auburn, Alabama and later went into television working for several TV stations before working at WSFA-TV in Montgomery for 33 years. While working for Channel 12, he received an award for excellence in broadcasting. He graduated from Auburn University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1987. George was a faithful member of the Vaughn Park Church of Christ and served as elder in the church for 9 years. He was a humble man with a great sense of humor. He enjoyed capturing family moments by filming his children while they were growing up. Later, he relished making family photo albums of both his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Margaret Sue Reavis Mitchell; three sons, David (Becky) Mitchell of Tullahoma, TN; Brian (Leigh) Mitchell of Montgomery, AL; and Ross (Tia) Mitchell of Fort Walton Beach, FL. Additional survivors include 8 grandchildren: John (Jessica) Mitchell, Paul Mitchell, Sara (David) Ford, Luke Mitchell, Andrew (Molly) Mitchell, Blake Mitchell, Clint (Britney) Mitchell and Maggie Mitchell. His 4 great grandchildren are: Evan John Mitchell, Lincoln Ross Mitchell, Landyn Claire Mitchell and Frances Noel Mitchell. He is also survived by one sister, Patricia Kildaw of Winnipeg and 38 nieces and nephews. Additional survivors include a sister in law, Joy Reavis Griffin, and two brothers in law, Bill Reavis and David Reavis.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Agape of Central Alabama, Mount Dora Children’s Home in Mount Dora, Florida or to a ministry of your choice that serves the needs of children.
