George Harvey Cox went home to be with his Lord on April 23, 2020. He was a faithful member of Morningview Baptist Church and served 45 years as Chief Fiscal Officer with the Alabama Army National Guard and as Colonel in the reserves. He enjoyed fellowship with so many brothers and sisters in the faith, co-workers and friends.
He lived a blessed 87 years and provided a wonderful Christian legacy and love for his family and friends. He was married 64 years to his wife Annette Wilson Cox and had three sons: William “Billy” Cox (Brucie), Steven Cary Cox all of Montgomery, and George Stanley Cox (Kelly) of Opelika. He was affectionately loved and known as Papaw to his nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Emily Moore (Tyler) of Birmingham, Tanner Cox (Katie Gray) of Mobile; Wesley Cox (Brandy) of Montgomery, Katie Cox of Tuscaloosa, Charlie Cox of Ft. Deposit, Josh Yates (Katie) of Tuscaloosa; Wilson, Parker and Braxton Cox of Opelika. And seven great grandchildren: Brady, Tatum, James, Ellie Kate, Grant, Mason, and Laurel.
He was proceeded in death by his mother Julia Elizabeth Cox of Montgomery and his father Clayton Thomas Cox of Mobile and by a beloved sister Betty Tompkins (Sam) of Pine Level and his brother Clayton.
He served many years in leadership with Morningview Baptist Church, Jimmy Hitchcock Memorial Award of the YMCA, Montgomery Parks & Recreation Board, and the National League Dixie Youth Baseball. In keeping with current health restrictions, a family only visitation and graveside service for George will be held Friday, May 1, 2020 at Greenwood Cemetery.
