Robert Eugene Stabler (Gene), born June 15, 1936, at Furman, Alabama to Henry Lamar and Miriam Hurst Stabler died December 28, 2017. A memorial service will be held at noon Wednesday, January 3 at First United Methodist Church with visitation following. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Julia Hayes Stabler. Also surviving are daughters Stephanie Stabler Cassell (Timothy Daniels Cassell) and Susan Leigh Stabler; sons Stephen Ashby Stabler (Susan Strickland Stabler), Stanley Eugene Stabler (Susan Kelley Stabler), and Scott Anthony Stabler (Megan Sutton Stabler); grandsons William Daniels Cassell, Thomas Andrew Cassell, Stephen Hill Stabler, Hayes Hodo Stabler, Colt Malachi Stabler, Luke Henry Stabler, Coleman James Stabler, and Sawyer Cope Stabler; and granddaughters Addison Kate Stabler, Sadie Elizabeth Stabler, and Finley Kate Stabler; nieces Linda Marie Till, Karen Till, Brianne Stabler (Gary Kocher), and Mary-Austin Stabler; and several other extended family members. He was preceded in death by brothers Dr. William Lamar Stabler, Dr. Henry Francis Stabler, and James Phillip Stabler; and sisters Miriam Stabler Till and Ida Mae Stabler.
Gene was a graduate of Moore Academy, Pine Apple, and received his Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Auburn University; additionally, he held an Accounting certificate from University of Alabama centers. He was employed with the state of Alabama for 33 years, first with the Examiners of Public Accounts, then with the State Treasurer’s Office. He served as Assistant State Treasurer for 20 years, first having been appointed by State Treasurer Annie Laurie Gunter, then subsequently re-appointed by State Treasurers George Wallace, Jr., and Kay Ivey. During his career he was involved in professional activities, serving as president of both the Institute of Management Accountants and Government Finance Officers Association of Alabama; chairman, Board of Management, East YMCA; long-time board member of Alabama State Employees Credit Union; board member of Alabama Indian Community Loan Fund. He received the prestigious Governmental Accounting and Auditing Forum award and the Edward and Judith Kamnikar Award of Merit for his work with Government Finance Officers Association of Alabama. Governor Fob James designated the day of his retirement “Robert E. Stabler Day.” After his retirement as Assistant State Treasurer, he became active in the Service Corps of Retired Executives, serving as its president.
As member of Dalraida United Methodist Church he was involved in the finance area, serving several years as chairman of Finance Committee. He was member of the chancel choir. Upon joining First United Methodist Church, he became a member of the Seekers Sunday School Class and the Cathedral Choir. He was also a volunteer for the Alabama Department of Archives and History. He continued to pursue his interest in traveling within the United States, visiting all 50 state and 3 territorial capitals; all 59 National Parks and over 100 other National Park sites. As a descendant of a pioneer Alabama family, he was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, and Sons of American Revolution.

A 12:00 pm Memorial Service is scheduled for Wednesday, January 3 at First United Methodist Church of Montgomery, Alabama.
