Frieda Ruth Zobisch Nieman age 91 died peacefully on July 13, 2024 after a brief illness. She was born on March 27, 1933 in Butler, Oklahoma to Carl and Ruby Zobisch. She married Daniel “Danny” Nieman in 1956 and immediately moved to Japan with his AirForce assignment followed later by moves to North Carolina and Virginia before settling in Montgomery in 1971.
Frieda was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Gene Zobisch. She is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Daniel Nieman, two daughters Tracy Ivey and Kelly (Rob) Kyzar. She was Mimi to 5 grandchildren Danielle (Will) Carter, Parker (Jamie Leigh) Ivey, Clay (Hannah) Kyzar, Courtney (Owen) Parrish and Callie Kyzar. She has 6 great grandchildren - John, Maggie, Samuel, Brooks, Sutton, Jay and two more will be joining the family in 2024.
Frieda was an active member of St. Bede Catholic Church. She attended Auburn University at Montgomery and graduated with a degree in History. She was an avid reader and loved her crossword puzzles. She volunteered for many years at the American Red Cross where she gave out countless cookies and cartons of juice. She guided many 4th graders through the Alabama Department of Archives exhibits as a docent. She was a spectator at numerous school activities and sporting events for her grandchildren. Watching the Auburn Tigers play football and basketball was a favorite pastime. Even though she could not swim she enjoyed many weekends at Lake Martin with family. Her family teased her because she was a member of a garden club that rarely gardened and a walking club that met for coffee more than they walked.
But most of all, Frieda will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and Mimi to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A visitation for Frieda will be held Thursday, July 18 at 11:00 am at St Bede Catholic Church (3870 Atlanta Hwy, Montgomery Al 36109). A funeral mass will immediately follow at 12:00. Burial will be Monday, July 22 at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, AL. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St Bede Catholic Church or the Montgomery Humane Society (1150 John Overton Drive, Montgomery AL 36110).
