Col. Ernest Gordon Howard

Col. Ernest Gordon Howard (“Ernie”), age 71, of Montgomery, Alabama, passed away on Monday, March 27, 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents: Gordon George Howard and Audrey Sanders Howard. Ernie is survived by his wife of 48 years, Martha Haygood Howard; his sons: Gordon (Courtney) Howard, Andrew (Meredith) Howard, and Nathan (Anna Claire) Howard; his grandchildren; Louisa, Harriett, Charlsie, Brooks, and Caleb; as well as his brother, Allan (Susie) Howard.

Ernie was a lover, fighter, veteran, leader, writer, educator, philosopher, friend, husband and father. He served 30 years in the U.S. Air Force. He never compromised his ideals and always moved forward with a relentless constancy of purpose.

A celebration of life graveside service for Ernie will be held Monday, April 3, 2023 at 12:30 PM at Alabama National Cemetery, 3133 Highway 119, Montevallo, Alabama 35115.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Ernie’s memory may be made to Wounded Warrior Project or another charitable organization supporting American Veterans.
