He served in the U.S. Air Force for four years (Veteran of Korean Conflict). After his active service, he was then employed for 20 years in civil service. He then later pursued a career as a residential building contractor for more than 25 years, as co-owner of M & R Builders and then owner of Rutledge Builders. He was a lifelong Baptist Church member, he also served as a deacon and youth leader. He was a co-founder of Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail Association, officer of Heart of Dixie Ramblers, and chaplain and assistant director of the Alabama Good Sam Club. He volunteered in worldwide mission projects, for Meals on Wheels, and VIPS (Volunteers In Police Service). He was an avid Appalachian trail hiker, deer hunter, fisherman, photographer, and world traveler..
He is survived by his loving wife Emily Totty Rutledge; daughters, Maureen Rutledge Kingry (Lee), Jeannine Rutledge Carleton, Kay Rutledge Woller (Will); grandchildren, Stacey Tarrant (Jeff), Amy Roper (John), Cameron Carleton, Kylie Cantrell (Justin), Caroline Woller, Sarah Catherine Reid (Eric), and William Woller, Jr. (Kileigh).; 5 great grandchildren; and brother, Irvin Rutledge.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Holley Edward Rutledge and Kylie McHaney Rutledge; sister, Ruby Rutledge Baugh; and brother Marvin Rutledge.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation for Edward on Sunday, November 26, 2023 at 1:00 at Alabama Heritage Funeral Home, 10505 Atlanta Highway, Montgomery, AL 36117, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 pm.
