David Richard Herring (67) of Montgomery passed away on January 9, 2021 at one of his favorite places, a hunting cabin in Barbour County. David will be lovingly remembered by his two daughters, Alex Herring and Molly (Charles) Cochran; sister Cheryl (Alan) Martin; nephew Ryan (Sarah) Martin; niece Lindsey (Talmadge) Simpson; former wife and forever best friend, Jo Ellen Herring; and his loyal dog Roscoe. He will also be remembered by several other cousins, nieces, and nephews who lovingly called him Uncle David. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles William Herring and Sadie Love Beech Herring.
David was born August 17, 1953 in Birmingham, AL, where he graduated from Banks High School. He then graduated from the University of Alabama, where he was a member of Theta Chi fraternity, with a B.S. in Manpower & Industrial Relations in 1975. He joined Norment Security Group in 1992 where he worked for 22 years. He then worked for Russell Construction as a project manager until he “retired” in 2019. After attending a wonderful retirement party, he promptly went back to work part time as a consultant. David was never one to be idle; in his free time, David could be found deer hunting, trout fishing, watching Alabama football games with his friends, or volunteering at his church.
David was a tremendous servant for numerous years at Aldersgate United Methodist Church. He served as the head of the Resources Team which oversees the work of the Finance, Permanent Endowment Fund, Trustees, and Staff Parish Relations Committee. He was the co-captain of ushers for nearly 20 years, and among many other roles, was also a faithful member of the Worship Arts Team, Finance, Trustees, Personnel and Pastor Parish Relations Committees.
Due to COVID concerns, there will be no memorial service. Condolences can be shared with the family at a drive through visitation at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 6610 Vaughn Road, Montgomery, AL 36116 on Saturday, January 23, 2021 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made in David’s honor to Aldersgate United Methodist Church or the World Wildlife Fund. Roll Tide!
