Charles Jerome McDill

McDill, Charles Jerome (Charlie), age 77, a resident of Montgomery, AL passed away on December 7, 2019 and is now at peace in Heaven with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Charlie was preceded in death by his father, Claude McDill, and mother, Katherine Slade, and third wife, Teresa McDill. Survivors include his wonderful and beloved wife, Nancy Phillips-McDill, sisters Patti Tunnell (Danny) and Norma Tucker, and his children Charlie Maurice McDill (Stephanie), Michelle Zarrabi (Ike), Michael James McDill, and Jaime Rycroft (Eric), and numerous grandchildren. Visitation will be held at Leak Memory on Friday, December 13 from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm with graveside services following at 3:00 pm in Greenwood Cemetery. Rev. Tony Glass will be officiating.

Charlie was quite a colorful entertaining character and a free spirit with a long history of living hard and who suffered hard times. Charlie lived life to the fullest. He was a loving and compassionate person who loved God, and he adored his family, including his Greenwinged Macaw, Chico and Moluccan Cocaktoo, Peaches. Charlie had a long history of playing professional music (guitar) in Nashville, TN performing on the Grand Old Opry at age 9, playing with Hank Snow, performing on the Happy Hal Burns show, and playing with Country Boy Eddie. Charlie played lead guitar and toured with Hank Williams, Jr., Barbara Mandrell, Bill Monroe, and other country stars. Charlie fronted his own country band in the 1970s and 1980s, “The Back Porch Band” and played in the river region’s local clubs. Charlie was a corporal in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1968. He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason. Charlie worked for Colonial Bread, Ford Motor Credit, and as Inn Keeper and Auditor at the local Holiday Inns and Days Inns. Charlie owned and operated the Tasty Burger restaurant on Church Street and Dexter Avenue for 22 years, all the while playing professional music. He also owned and operated his concession trailer, Famous Burgers & Spuds, for 13 years until governmental entities were responsible for bringing all of it to an end. Charlie worked at other places, as well as Victoryland’s Oasis Buffet, until it closed. Charlie was a member of First Pentecostal Church in Prattville, AL, where he also used to play his guitar and sang. Charlie also used his talent ministering at local nursing home facilities. His favorite passions were Alabama Football, music, and boating on Lake Martin, of which he owned three lake homes and several boats during his lifetime. Charlie was loved by many and he entertained a lot of people during his life. Charlie lived out the rest of his life in quiet seclusion with his wife. Charlie had traumatic life-changing events in his life, and now he is at peace with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
