Carolyn was born on December 18, 1930 to Lois Atkins Hollis and Virgil Lee Hollis of Covin, Alabama. Carolyn was a graduate of Fayette County High School where she was a member of the Beta Club, the National Scholastic Honor Society, and was listed in the “High School Register” of outstanding students in Southern high schools. Chosen as the school’s “Good Citizenship Girl”, Carolyn was recognized and feted by the Birmingham Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She served as the associate editor of the school yearbook, was second in the beauty contest, a member of the Junior Red Cross, and a member of the Band and vice president of the Band Club.
Carolyn attended Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama where she met the love of her life and future husband, Lon Conner. They were married on June 26, 1953 and, together, had three much beloved daughters: Susan O’Connor (Mark) of Montgomery; Virginia Hornsby (John) of Birmingham; Laura Tribble of Atlanta.
A very involved mother, Carolyn taught her girls to sew, to garden, and to cook; she encouraged them in all musical pursuits; she provided them a lifelong example of a true and abiding friend through her close relations with Sally Griffin, Loretta Bach, Barbara McCorvey Duke, and Josephine Alred; and of a caring and selfless family member to five generations. She served as a Room Mother and PTA President numerous times during the girls’ years at Dalraida Elementary School, and enjoyed her years of serving as neighborhood coordinator for the March of Dimes, as Girl Scout Troop Leader, and as voting poll worker.
Carolyn is survived by Lon to whom she was a loyal and devoted wife, by her daughters whom she inspired, by her beloved grandchildren, Jennifer O’Connor (Michael), Lindsey O’Connor (Trace), Caroline Haisten (Austin), Stanford Hornsby, Elizabeth Whitacre (Paul), Mary Shelton Hornsby, and Catherine Tribble, and by her celebrated great grandchildren, Maddox Crumpton, Mary Ruth Haisten, Laura Hollis Crumpton, Anneliese Crumpton, Thomas Haisten, Edith Welch and Mattie Haisten.
Carolyn was predeceased by her sister, Mary Elizabeth Miller. She is survived by her niece, Marguerite Campbell Miller; her nephew, John G. Miller, Jr.; her extraordinarily beloved cousin Anne Cooner Bowlus; and Ruth Vineyard Cooner, widow of Dr. William H. Cooner.
Carolyn's family would like to thank Amanda Hill, Charita Edwards, Mildred Zachery, Delores Dade, Joyce Gilchrist, Chaqueisha Fortson, and Indria Weeks for their invaluable friendship and loving care.
