Betty was an avid artist and crafts woman, excelling especially at knitting and needlework. For nearly ten years in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Betty won the blue ribbons in knitting and needlepoint nearly every year at the Alabama State Fair in Montgomery. She had a B.A. from the University of Alabama and was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha (ZTA) sorority, which she maintained a lifetime interest in supporting and helping recruit new members. She was also very active in her church, the Episcopal women of the Diocese of Alabama and Camp McDowell. Betty loved the outdoors and was a Cub Scout Den Mother. Before marrying in 1950, she worked as a hostess on the famous trains of the Southern Railway during the golden age of American passenger rail travel in the late 1940s after World War II. She worked on the Southerner, the Tennessean and the fabled Southern Crescent.
The family would like to offer a special word of thanks to Comfort Care Hospice and also gratitude is extended to Betty’s long-time sitters Bonnie Williams, Teresa Foster, Bronnie Mathews and Willie Mae Raintree.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Church of the Ascension, Montgomery, Alabama, or Camp McDowell, Nauvoo, Alabama.
