Barbara Jean Edgar Duke, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away on Friday, July 28, 2023 at the age of 83. She is survived by Robert M. Duke, her husband of 41 years; her children, William McCorvey, Jr., Bradley McCorvey; step-son, Malcolm Duke; the father of her children, William McCorvey, Sr.; many beloved cousins, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, Carl Edgar; her mother, Thelma Edgar; her son, Barton McCorvey; and her granddaughter, Ryan Kirkland. She leaves behind a legacy of love and service that will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her.
Born in Montgomery, Alabama on September 30, 1939, Barbara was a proud graduate of Robert E. Lee High School, class of 1957. Her early years were shaped by her childhood membership at Highland Gardens Baptist Church, and as an adult, she devoted herself to Frazer United Methodist Church, where she was an active member of the Basic Bible Sunday school class.
Barbara's entrepreneurial spirit thrived as she made a mark in the business world. Renowned as the franchise owner of the Swiss Colony at Eastdale Mall and the co-owner of the cherished Panache at Rose Hill, she left an indelible impact on the culinary landscape. Her culinary expertise was also immortalized in the Panache at Rose Hill Cookbook, a testament to her passion for sharing the joy of cooking.
Beyond her professional success, Barbara's life was a testament to service and compassion. A dedicated volunteer, she readily embraced leadership roles and offered unwavering support to those in need. For over 25 years, she delivered Meals on Wheels, bringing nourishment and care to countless homes. As the Chairman of the Christian Women's Club and a dedicated Board member of Hospice of Montgomery and the Montgomery Area Council on Aging, she touched the lives of many with her genuine kindness and empathetic heart.
Barbara's community involvement extended to the Pike Road Historical Society, where she played a vital role in preserving the history and heritage of the Pike Road area. Her numerous accolades, including being the Montgomery Cancer Association's Biggest Rat in Town runner-up, Ms. Pike Road, and Citizen of the Year, are a testament to her dedication to serving others.
Music was a cherished part of Barbara's life, and her talent as a pianist brought joy to family and friends for decades, especially during cherished Christmas Eve gatherings filled with carols and the warmth of family and fellowship.
Her family and friends will forever cherish the love, care, and support Barbara showered upon them. She was like a mother to all who knew her, and her nurturing spirit extended beyond her family, touching the lives of her community with open arms.
A celebration of life service will be held on Tuesday, August 1, 2023 at 11:00am in the East Sanctuary at Frazer Church in Montgomery, Alabama, with Dr. John Ed Mathison officiating. Friends will be received in the East Sanctuary at Frazer Church for a visitation at 10:00am. A private graveside service for family will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
In honor of Barbara's memory, memorial contributions may be made to the Montgomery Area Council on Aging (MACOA). As we bid farewell to this extraordinary woman, may we carry on her legacy of love, leadership, and selflessness in our own lives, making the world a better place, just as she did. Barbara will be deeply missed but never forgotten. May she rest in peace in the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
