She is preceded in death by her mother, Martha B. Jungwirth.
She is survived by her loving husband of 32 years, Wayde P. Thornton; son, John W. Thornton (Kourtni); father, Edward J. Jungwirth; and granddaughters Emma Claire and Olivia Thornton. She is also survived by her nieces, nephews, and a host of cousins.
Pallbearers will be John Thornton, Will Thornton, Heywood Miller, Kevin Cox, Matthew Gamble, and Randy Johnson.
Amy was raised in Wetumpka, Alabama. She attended Saint James School and graduated in 1978. Following her graduation from Saint James, she enrolled and attended the University of Montevallo, receiving her Bachelor's Degree in Secondary Education in 1981 and her Master's Degree in 1985.
She began her teaching career at Vincent High School in 1982. Following her tenure at Shelby County High School, she would also teach at Calera High School, Wetumpka Junior High School, and Eclectic Middle School, retiring in 2008 after over 27 years of teaching.
While attending her 10 year high school reunion, Amy would reunite with a former classmate, Wayde Thornton. The two began dating soon after the reunion and would marry on July 15, 1989. In May of 1990, the couple welcomed a baby boy, John William Thornton.
Those that knew her would say she was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, teacher, mentor, and friend. She was also a follower of Christ and a member of Taylor Road Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. Amy enjoyed attending services and Sunday school at Taylor Road and would also assist with Vacation Bible School during the summer.
She also enjoyed reading novels, traveling, telling stories from her teaching career, and shopping. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family. Some of her favorite family memories included moments she shared with her loving husband, son, granddaughters, and her cats.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation on Tuesday, June 14th, 2022 from one in the afternoon until three in the afternoon at Alabama Heritage Funeral Home, located at 10505 Atlanta Highway, Montgomery, Alabama 36117. A chapel service, beginning at 3 PM, will follow the visitation. The committal service will follow shortly after the chapel services have ended.
