Addie Lucille (Foster) Thomas was born February 17, 1936, in Choctaw Bluff, Alabama to Minnie Lee (Scott) Stallworth and adopted into the family of Dave and Laura Foster and their daughter Mallie Howard of Jackson, Alabama. After the death of her adopted parents, Mallie raised her and they moved to Mobile, Alabama.
Upon graduating from Central High School in 1953, Addie attended Alabama State Junior College for two years in Mobile while caring for Mallie, who had become handicapped. Later, she moved to Montgomery in 1955, to finish her studies at the Alabama State College main campus, which later became known as Alabama State University (ASU). Addie paid for her own education while in college by working on campus in the administration office. While working and in college, she met and married a very handsome classmate and Korean War Veteran, Marvin Seegars Thomas. Addie completed her studies in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education-Social Studies. And later, she obtained a certificate from ASU in Special Education. She was honored in 2010 and named an ASU Golden Icon ( 50 years later), along with the staff, faculty and classmates whose efforts during this time spearheaded the Civil Rights movement.
After raising her children to school age, Addie taught special needs, elementary and high school students, before finishing her career at Carver Senior High School in Montgomery, AL. In addition to teaching students at Carver, she served as a chaperone on various local, national, and international school choir performance trips. In total, she gave 33 years of service to education in the Alabama School System before retiring.
Addie loved the Lord. She was raised a devoted Christian in the Baptist denomination. In youth, Addie was active in the choir; red circle meetings and other church related activities. Upon marrying her Marvin, she joined her husband and raised her children at The First CME Methodist Church on Oak Street. Once her kids were of adult age, Addie returned to the Baptist denomination and joined Beulah Missionary Baptist Church. Over the years, she attended Bible Study, worked with the Meals on Wheels program, Summer Vacation Bible School, gave freely to the Sick and Shut-in ministry, and was an active member of Missionary Circle #2.
Addie loved and was loved by many. She gave with such vigor of her time, efforts and resources. She had many hobbies and talents including gardening, sewing, arts and crafts, home decorating, fashion and the list goes on. Addie will truly be missed.
