Thomas Hewitt Hicks passed away peacefully on October 26th, 2023 surrounded by his family. Born on July 15th, 1943 in West Blocton, Alabama, he was the youngest son of John and Geneva Hicks. He grew up in Pea Ridge, AL with his 3 sisters and brother. After graduating from the University of Montevallo with a Bachelor's degree in Economics, he moved to Georgia to teach school. After 3 years, he joined the US Marine Corps where he proudly dedicated 24 years of his life to his country. After retiring from the military to be closer to his family, he went back to teaching for nearly another two decades in the Mobile County school system. Thomas spent most of his life serving and helping others. Upon a second retirement, he moved to Helena, AL where he spent the rest of his days with his family. He loved his family fiercely and spent many fun days taking them to amusement parks, historical sites and live concerts. He also loved birthdays and Alabama football.
He is survived by his wife, Phuong Mai Thi Nguyen-Hicks; his children, Elizabeth Hicks Sharpe (Clay), Catherine Hicks Byrd (Julian), Angel Hicks and Thomas Vu Hicks; six grandchildren, Anna Cassidy Sharpe, Reagan Elizabeth Sharpe, Griffin Clayton Sharpe, Julian MacLean Byrd, Claire Catherine Byrd and Lachlan Hewitt Byrd; his brother, Edward Hicks (Deborah) of Troy, AL and his dearest cousin, Phillip Haynie (Barbara) of Alabaster, AL. He will be missed deeply and remembered fondly.
A Graveside Service will be held Monday, November 6th, 2023 at 10:15 AM at Alabama National Cemetery, 3133 Hwy 119, Montevallo, AL 35115.
