October 15, 1940 to October 24, 2022
When you look at the nightly sky, a bright light shines like no other. Our Northern Star, John Buford Greene, Jr., has been the guiding compass of the Greene Family for 82 years. He now moves on to be with God.
He was known as “Big John” or “Johnny” to his many friends and he was the kind of guy that was truly a friend to all. He was a simple, hard working man who was devoted to his family.
In high school, he met the love of his life, Cecilia Lawson Greene, and they were married for 62 blessed years. In his later years many kids mistook John for Santa Claus, with his snow-white beard and hair, plus his jolly laugh and sense of humor. However, his four children knew he was the real deal, as he worked so very hard for many years at Kimberly Clark to provide wonderful vacations that created very cherished memories for the family.
Next to his wife and kids, John’s greatest love was for some good ole Alabama football. Kicked back in his favorite recliner, many swear words were shouted during the annual Iron Bowl. His biggest regret in life was that his kids’ names were not Thomas, Bryant, Stallings, and Saban.
When the Lord called John home, surely the heavenly Million Dollar Band played “Rammer Jammer”, while a man in a houndstooth hat waited to shake his biggest fan’s hand.
He is survived by his wonderful wife, Cecilia, his four children, John, Christopher, Deborah and Lisa and a list of grandchildren too numerous to list.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 28, from 12:30 to 1:30 at Rockco Funeral Home in Montevallo, AL, immediately followed by graveside services at Ryan Cemetery, where he will lay beside his father and mother. All are invited to come and celebrate this wonderful man’s life.
