Sunday, August 20. John was born on March 11, 1943, in Bessemer, Alabama. His life was marked by service to his country and his community.
He was employed by the FBI for two years before enlisting in the United States Air Force which he served for 20 years. John worked at local car dealerships before launching his own business, Small Engine Repair, in Pelham.
John was a devoted and gracious Honey, Dad, and Grampy. He dedicated himself to volunteering in the Alabaster and Pelham communities where he lived and worked. He belonged to the Cahaba Valley Elks Lodge #1738 for 37 years, and he led it as president for four terms. John’s volunteerism also included activities at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, the Masonic Lodge in Alabaster, and the Jaycees of Pelham. He was a member of the Church of the Highlands where he served on the Dream Team.
John’s favorite pastime was fishing. It was surpassed in recent years by woodworking, and he shared his gifts with friends and family members. He will be remembered in many ways such as his sense of humor and his love of Alabama football.
John is survived by his loving wife Sharon of 57 years. His daughter Rosanne Perez (Sam) of Virginia Beach, VA. His sons Jim Gaydon (Caron) of San Ramon, CA, and Jay Gaydon (Andrea) of Pelham, AL. John also is survived by eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Visitation will be from 12 to 1 p.m., Friday, August 25, at the Church of the Highlands Riverchase Campus followed by a Celebration of Life at 1 p.m. At 3 p.m. a memorial service will be held at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo.
