James Allen “Bud” Cofer, age 79, of Maylene, passed away October 30, 2017. He was born in Dogwood, Alabama and was known as “Red” in his younger years for his bright red hair. He started working at the cotton mill in Siluria at the age of 14, and married his sweetheart, Cynthia, at age 17. He loved to laugh and tell stories, but more than anything, Bud loved his family. He was preceded in death by his son, David Lee Cofer; brother, Billy Ray Cofer; sister, Eleanor Cofer.; and sister-in-law, Betty Martin. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Cynthia Smitherman Cofer; sons, James G. “Jimmy” Cofer (Debbie), Larkin Ray Cofer, and James Allen “Buddy” Cofer, Jr. (Jennifer); daughter-in-law, Beverly Vick; 7 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Mary Frances Cofer and Sarah Franklin brother-in-law, Bobby Martin; and many nieces and nephews that he loved as his own. His funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 1:00 PM at Rockco Funeral Home (Montevallo), with visitation to begin at 12:00 PM. Bro. Brook Lovett will officiate and burial will follow at Shady Grove Cemetery in Randolph.
