Frances Yates Shaw, age 96, of Montevallo, Alabama, passed away on Sunday, December 1, 2024. Born September 23, 1928, to Rhudy Payne Yates and Mary Bell Gill Yates, she was deeply influenced by her large family and their farm life. Earning degrees in History and English from Alabama College, she taught high school in Fayette, Pinson, and Montevallo. Frances' marriage to Truman Bernard Shaw on May 19, 1950 endured 62 years.
She took pride in service and leadership, volunteering over the years for numerous civic agencies and clubs, as well as actively serving her church in many roles and as a Sunday School teacher for decades. In 1985, she was honored as Montevallo's Volunteer of the Year. During her 61 years as a dedicated member of Montevallo's chapter of Alabama Homemakers and Community Leaders, she held various leadership positions at the state and local levels and was recently named the club's 2024 Key Member. At home, she was a skilled gardener, well known for her beautiful gardens and green thumb advice.
She has left us an enduring legacy of religious faith, devotion, integrity, and friendship for the countless people she served and loved.
Frances is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Truman Bernard Shaw; parents, Rhudy and Mary Bell Yates; sister, Gladys Yates Casey; and brothers, John Yates, Joe Earl Yates, and Rhudy Paul Yates.
Frances is survived by her son, Thomas Yates Shaw of Montevallo, AL; daughter, Elizabeth Shaw Oedamer (Robert) of Brierfield, AL; brothers, Bob Yates (Ann) of Woodland, AL, and Mac Yates of Wedowee, AL; sister, Sue Benefield of Wedowee, AL; sister-in-law, Jane Stillwell Yates of Wedowee, AL; as well as a host of nieces and nephews, all of whom she dearly loved.
A visitation for Frances will be held Monday, December 9, 2024 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Montevallo First Baptist Church followed by a funeral service at 1:00 pm, A graveside service will occur Monday, December 9, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Alabama National Cemetery.
