Charnell was a published author in scientific journals for eye research. She worked at Brookwood and UAB Hospital. She was a long time member of the Historical Society of Gulfport. Recently she was employed as the museum operations coordinator. Charnell was generous with her time and talents. We called her our "McGiver". She could fix anything. She made many friends through her passion for local history. She supervised our university practicum students and the funded employees who were her assistants. She was dependable and kind but strong in her devotion to the mission. Her innovations have enhanced the effectiveness of the programs. She will be sorely missed.
She is survived by daughter, Alissia Sommers of Montevallo; grandchildren, Hannah Sommers and Michael Sommers of Montevallo; daughter, Marieta Garcia; brother, Douglas Inglis of Spain; sister, Eileen Inglis Pascavage of UK and her loving cats, Mungo and Freddy Mercury.
Charnell was preceded in death by her parents and son, Randall Alan Sommers; and her beloved cat, Meko.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at 3 pm at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Montevallo, Al with a graveside to follow at Blow Cemetery at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.
