On April 19, 1960, Lewis Clifford Haynes III was born to Cliff and Bobbe Haynes. He was born in Glendale, California at what is now known as Glendale Adventist Hospital. It was soon decided that this little baby had a very large name to carry around. Therefore, he soon became known as “Kip”. The name he would use his entire life.
Kip grew up along with his sister, Carol and brother, Tony in a very loving home here in the Monrovia/Duarte area. Both of his parents had a strong commitment to family first! Life was filled with all the normal activities of childhood. Family gatherings, holiday celebrations, family vacation road trips, camping, Cub Scouts, Pathfinders and other church activities. Kip was smart and his mother instilled a love of reading in all of her children. Kip was a voracious reader his entire life. He eagerly awaited each new publication by his favorite author, Stephen King. School, on the other hand, was a place Kip had to be for eight hours a day until he could be free to do what he really wanted to-surfing, skateboarding, moto-cross riding and a pickup game of “hoops” in the park was always a good idea!
After he finished school Kip began working in the automotive industry. Kip was a hard worker and was an asset to every dealership he worked for. Kip was one of the best parts men in the business. Being a humble man, and in typical “Kip” style, he would downplay such remarks by saying, “A trained monkey could do my job!” Not true! Kip was respected by owners, managers and co-workers alike. Kip was a gentleman and had a deep respect for women and was therefore loved by the female staff wherever he was employed.
During his lifetime Kip had three long term relationships. He was married once to Susan Lundgren with whom he had his daughter, Sarah. With Susan’s untimely passing when Sarah was only three years old, Kip found himself in the position of being a single parent of a little girl. The decision was made that he would move in with his sister who along with other family and friends would help him raise Sarah. Kip was a wonderful father giving Sarah everything he could-most importantly he was present in her life. With his long hair and rock and roll attitude he was the “Cool Dad”-loved by Sarah’s friends. He gathered in two more daughters, Natacia Cruz and Victoriah Martinez, both of whom still refer to him affectionally as “Daddy Kip”.
Kip was kind, decent and a good man. He was also a man of faith-although like everything he did he had his own unique style. Kip’s faith was deeply personal and yet he was a natural evangelist-the most necessary kind-he showed people the love of Jesus by how he treated them! Kip would often pray with people when asked or just talk about God in a very natural way. He was a member of All Nations SDA Church where he held many positions, Head Deacon, Facilities Manager and most recently unofficial member of the kitchen crew! Once again, the ladies loved him-they could depend on him to set-up, clean-up or whatever else they needed him to do. The entire church depended on Kip to do what was needed and he will be greatly missed!
Of course, for the past six years Kip’s greatest joy was his grandson, Michael-better known as “Bear” or “Handsome”! Just as Kip was an exceptional father, he was also a wonderful Grandpa!
Kip has left an empty hole in many hearts which can now only be filled by memories. He is survived by his daughter, Sarah and grandson, Michael. He also leaves behind his sister, Carol, brother Tony, other relatives and many friends. Kip went to sleep in Jesus on March8, 2021. We who are left mourn the loss of him in our lives but can rejoice in the assurance of the return of our Savior Jesus Christ and in the knowledge that we will see Kip again and spend eternity with him.
