Snohomish, Washington, after a 10 month battle against cancer. He was surrounded by his
three devoted daughters, and, in the end, went very peacefully.
John was born at Jones Memorial Hospital in Grass Valley, California, attended Mt. St. Mary's
Academy, and graduated from Empire High School in 1970. He married Martha Frey in 1973,
with whom he spent 23 years and had three daughters. He spent 10 years working as a
surveyor and logger in California, eventually ending up in Bozeman, Montana. There he
attended Montana State University graduating with a bachelor's degree in Mechanical and
Electrical Engineering in 1984.
With that, he started an epic 33 year career at Boeing working on cabin systems, doing test
flights, satellite communication systems, and collaborating on FAA approvals. He was very well
respected, and after working his way up, he worked as a contracted employee, allowing him to
live in Arizona and finally Spokane, Washington, which he called home for his last 10 years. He
retired in 2018.
He spent most of his middle-age life living in the suburbs of Seattle raising 3 daughters, helping
with homework, attending ballet and flute recitals, BBQs with neighbors, and family camping
trips. No matter the season, he could always be seen wearing his signature flannel shirts, and
boy, did he love chocolate milkshakes and football!! John had a great love for the outdoors,
stemming from his childhood days spent on the Yuba river, surveying in the mountains, and fly
fishing. He married a second time in 1996 to Karen Battenfield and had 2 step daughters and a
step son. They later divorced in 2011.
John was known for his generosity and kindness, always there to help during times of need or
tragedy. He donated to charities and worked for Meals on Wheels after retirement. He didn't
care about material things, and found all his joy in his children and grandchildren. His smile,
quick wit, and ability to listen and talk to anyone about anything, brought him deep into the
hearts of so many people.
Now, no longer here with us, we imagine him reunited with his counterparts, step brother Ned
Wilson and brother Peter Grover, who both passed in October 2022. He is also preceded by his
sisters Mary and Catherine Grover, his step brother Mike Wilson, his parents Donald and Deloris
Grover, and step mother Renee Wilson. He is survived by his daughters, Shawna Schmitz, Tara
Krueger, and Rebecca Skrifvars, and his seven grandchildren (all between the ages 2 and 10),
his brother, Tim Grover, and sister, Carol Cook.
Known in his later years as "Papa", and to him, his greatest achievement, John will be forever
missed and loved by countless family and friends.
