He was one of 10 children born to the late Willie Evans, Sr. and Lattie Brunson Evans. When he was four years old, his family moved from Chesterfield to Monroe and resided at 1207 Fairley Avenue. His early Christian education began at Friendship Baptist Church.
From 1977 - 1994, he was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Arlington, VA. While there, he worked with the Educational Guild Ministry to provide scholarships and educational programs to young church members and families. In 1995, he joined Ebenezer African Methodist Episcopal Church in Fort Washington, MD. He was a member of the Family Ministry and a participant in Men's Season activities.
Willie was a graduate of Winchester Avenue High School's Class of 1966. He later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Strayer University. As an avid learner and encourager, he always stressed to others the importance of educating oneself and staying informed of what's going on in one's community and the world.
On March 27,1971 he married Rachelle Yvonne Patterson of Monroe. This loving marriage was sustained for 52 years ending only with his final transition. He was a blessed father of four children (three sons and one daughter). He was a very loving and devoted husband and a doting father and grandfather.
Willie began his career in 1968 when he enlisted in the United States Air Force. His career extended into the federal government, including the U.S. Civil Service and the U.S. Foreign Service. He served at the Interstate Commerce Commission, DC Department of Corrections, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the U.S. Department of State in domestic and foreign assignments. In addition to domestic assignments, he was blessed to serve on the continents of Asia (the Middle East), Africa, Europe, and South America.
Beyond his federal retirement in 2004, he worked in the Alexandria City Public School system for eight years with children with special needs who were on the autism spectrum. He was a member of several organizations: Life member of Blacks In Government (BIG), the NAACP, Winchester Alumni Assoc., American Legion VA Post 0176, and the Lorton Heritage Society. In addition, he served for several years as an elections official for the Fairfax County Office of Elections.
Willie was preceded in death by his son, Ryan; his siblings: Mary, Rudolph, Theodore, Wahlilian, Virginia, Lillie Ann, Lottie Jean, and Sylvia. He leaves to cherish his memory: His wife Yvonne; sons Willie Robinson and Brandon Evans; daughter Novelie Evans, brother Garfield Evans (Tina); granddaughters Trinity Harton, Andrea Robinson, Elise Evans, Lydia Evans, grandson Gavin Evans, close relatives and a host of friends.
A service to celebrate Willie’s life will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at 1:00 pm at Friendship Baptist Church, located at 501 P E Bazemore Drive in Monroe, North Carolina. Burial with military honors will be held immediately following the service at Hillcrest Cemetery.
