Born October 13, 1939, he was a kind and caring individual with a dry sense of humor and a man of few words. More importantly, Richard was a family man who loved his wife, daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren with all his heart. Not only did he love spending time with them at his beach house in Garden City, South Carolina, but loved watching all his grandchildren play sports when they were growing up and rarely missed a game. When it came to hobbies and interests, Richard enjoyed watching NASCAR racing with Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt being his favorite drivers. He also enjoyed trading and selling NASCAR collectibles at the Surfside Beach, South Carolina flea market, which he did for several years after he retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation in 1997. In his community, Richard was an active member and officer of the Wingate Jaycees for many years, serving at the local, regional, and state levels. He was also a member of the Meadow Branch 0578 Masonic Lodge in Wingate, North Carolina and was initiated on March 16, 1979. He also served as Commissioner of the Wingate Town Council from 1981-1989 as well as serving his country in the Army National Guard.
Richard is preceded in death by his parents, Marshall and Mozelle Perry, as well as numerous aunts and uncles as both of his parents were one of 13 children and are all now deceased. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Annette Perry of Wingate, North Carolina; daughters, Patti Brooks (Mike) of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Paula McBride (Charles) of Rockwell, North Carolina; grandchildren, Matthew Hargett, Nathan Hargett (fiancé, Macy Thompson), Wesley Hargett, Andrew Brooks, and Jessica Brooks Riggs (Easton); great-grandchildren, Jocelyn, Jrue, Janaé, McKenzie, Riley, and Madilyn; brother-in-law, Ryan Stafford; and sister-in-law, Susan Stafford.
