He was born in Union County, NC, on August 20th, 1959. Rex was preceded in death by two brothers; Mike and Stanley Gay. He is survived by his mother; Francine Hammond and one brother; Rick Gay.
Even though Rex was quadriplegic for nearly 38 years he would brighten the day of those who came to visit him. He showed a sense of pride that he felt when taking care of his business needs. All who have seen the paintings he created with brush in mouth are impressed.
He loved to navigate his motorized wheelchair around the property and outings to the big box stores in Monroe. He enjoyed collecting and trading guns and knives, following the Carolina Panthers and NASCAR racing. He enjoyed life to the fullest even with all the obstacles he encountered.
The family wishes to thank Dr. John Vick and the staff at Union Family Practice for their caring and compassion. Also we extend thanks to Union County EMT’s, First Responders from Sandy Ridge / Altan area, Members of New Hope United Methodist Church and his caregivers over the years.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Sunday, August 16th, 2015, at New Hope United Methodist Church, 3221 Plyler Mill Rd., Monroe, NC 28112. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be made to New Hope United Methodist Church.
McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe is serving the family of Rex Gay.
