He was born January 17, 1938, in Spencerville, Ohio, to the late Dewey Spence and Pauline Harner Spence. Paul relocated to Monroe in 1961 with Oro Manufacturing Company where he worked for many years before joining Swanson Sheet Metal, and retired in 2004 as plant manager.
He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Martha Tadlock Spence. Also surviving are sons Bob Spence (Lisa) of Monroe, Tim Spence of Monroe, David Polk of Monroe, Steven Polk (Amy) of Monroe; daughter Tammy Vaughn of Monroe; grandchildren David (Rusty) Spence (and fiancé Liz Jenkins) of Monroe, Alan Spence of Monroe, Gail Polk of Tennessee, Steven Polk Jr. of Lexington, NC, Dustin Rainey (Lauren) of Waxhaw, Anthony (AJ) Vaughn of Monroe, Brandon Polk (Etiska) of Lexington, NC, Lindsay Polk of Matthews; great grandchildren Layla Spence, Maci Polk and Eleanor Polk; brothers Dewey Spence(Lynda) of Monroe and Leroy Spence of Ohio; sister Mertie Shauder (Chuck) of Ohio.
He was preceded in death by son David Spence, grandson Billy Spence, brothers Everett Spence and Ralph (Jim) Spence, sister Ella Mae Roberts, and three infant sisters.
Paul was an avid fisherman and bowler, and enjoyed time with his family and church family.
He was an active member of Love Baptist Church, Deese Road, Monroe, where his celebration of life service will be Monday, December 20, 2021. Visitation will be at 1:00 and service at 2:00, officiated by Pastor Don Thompson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family would like to especially thank Hospice of Monroe for such wonderful care, and ask that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice or Love Baptist Church.
