At age 10, Nancy and her family moved from New York to Americus, Georgia where she graduated from high school and college. While at college she met Luther Judy, and they married in 1970. After a few years living in Newport News, Virginia, Nancy and Luther moved to North Carolina and started a family.
Nancy’s warm and fun personality meant she rarely met a stranger. She had a keen ability to make others feel welcome and cared for very quickly. She took great pleasure in watching others find their joy, especially her grandchildren. With a true heart of an adventurer, she loved to travel and enjoyed taking trips with Luther whenever they could. Nancy’s natural curiosity and love of nature fueled her gift for teaching others about the world around them. In her later years, she greatly enjoyed creating crafts and sharing those with others. Of her many hobbies and interests, her favorites were reading, word games, puzzles, arts and crafts, being outdoors, nature photography, fishing, music, family history, and flower gardening – especially day lilies. Her family, her dog, Benson, as well as many friends will miss her love and her boisterous laugh.
During her time in Monroe, Nancy volunteered as a Girl Scout troop leader which led to a job with Hornets’ Nest Girl Scout Council in Charlotte where she worked for many years. For thirty-five years, she was an active member of Bakers Volunteer Fire Department. She loved teaching young children as a Sunday School teacher at West Monroe Baptist and Hopewell Baptist churches.
Nancy is survived by her husband of 54 years, Luther; daughters: LouAnne Sexton (Brian) of Hayes, Virginia, Jennifer Marrero (David) of Monroe, Amanda Horton (Adam) of Winston-Salem; grandchildren: Gabriella Sexton, Ian and Avery Marrero, Everett and Whittaker Horton; twin sister Alice Drury (Paul) of White Oak, Georgia as well as several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Steve Mizio.
A visitation will be held Sunday, March 23, 2025, from 1 PM to 1:45 PM at Hopewell Baptist Church (Legacy Campus), 420 Hopewell Church Road, Monroe, with a Celebration of Life following at 2 PM. The family will have a private graveside service at Lakeland Memorial Park immediately after.
In lieu of flowers, kindly donate to the Humane Society of Union County or the North Carolina Girl Scouts.
