Born and raised in Union County, North Carolina, Gayle devoted her adult life as a school teacher for 28 years. She had a profound impact on all the children who had the pleasure of having her as a teacher. Her love and passion for teaching did not go unnoticed as she was awarded Teacher of the Year by the Union County Public School System. After retiring from teaching, Gayle continued to remain involved in education by working at the Union County Public Library. She served there for 11 years before finally retiring in 2013. Gayle had many loves and passions in her life besides the children she taught. First and foremost, she loved the Lord, sharing devotionals each day with numerous friends and former classmates. She was also a devoted North Carolina Tarheel and Atlanta Braves fan as well as a diehard fan of the county music group Alabama. She also enjoyed trips to the beach as well as spending time with her beloved cats.
Gayle was predeceased in death by her parents, Judge Lee and Ruby Elizabeth; sisters, Hilda “Cookie” Price, Joyce Ann Deese, Shirley Simpson Banks; brother, Junior Lee Simpson; and nephews, Tommy Banks and Dennis Whitaker. She is survived by her nieces, Cathy Whitaker Cook and Loretta Deese; nephews, Gary Whitaker, Mike Deese, and Richard Deese; great nephews, Joshua Cook, Jason Cook, Dennis Whitaker, Jr, and Jeffrey Carnes.; great nieces, Stacy Ann Whitaker and Amanda Carnes; and great-great nephews, Rowan Cook, Tristan Funk, Ethan Clark, Maximus Whitaker, and Chandler Kunz.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 13, 2023 from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm at McEwen Funeral Home, located at 204 South Main Street in Monroe, North Carolina. A service to celebrate her life will be held on Thursday, September 14, 2023 at 2:00 pm at Benton Heights Presbyterian Church, located at 2701 Concord Hwy in Monroe, North Carolina.
