Joan was born in Mecklenburg County, NC to the late James Brice and Mary Joanna Griffin Flowe. She was the youngest of 6 children Arthur James Lowe (1923-2002); Charlie Myers Flowe (1925-2008); Edna Mae Flowe (1928-1991); Max Columbus Flowe (1931-2008); and Effie Jean Flowe (1934-2007).
Joan graduated from high school and worked at Woolworth before becoming a secretary for the AFL/CIO until the headquarters was moved to Atlanta. Then she worked in the family-owned Western Honda of Monroe until semi-retirement to travel with husband Bill. Before retiring completely, Joan worked at the Candle Factory in Marshville NC. She was the alto voice in a gospel group that sang in the triad. An active member of the Baptist Church Joan donated the land for Brush Arbor Church of Monroe.
Joan was always family oriented and loved with unconditional faith and much laughter. Her home was always open to family and visitors alike. She was fun to be around, loved to travel to the beach and the mountains. If you were in need, she was there to support and help in any way she could. She liked to cook, crochet, read, and did some tole painting. Her signature dishes of potato salad and carrot cake were always the request of family gatherings.
She is proceeded in death by husbands, William (Bill) Harrel Sherrin (1937-1986); Scott Yow SR (1930-2010); Joel Van Helms (1933-2024); and stepdaughter, Linda Ruth Yow (1956-2024).
She is survived by daughters, Cynthia Ann (1957) of Graham, NC; Melanie Kem (1959) of Reidsville, NC; and Susie Yow Calkins (husband Kevin) of Monroe, NC; Nephew/son, Danny O’Shea Keaton, and numerous nieces and nephews; Stepchildren, Scott Yow Jr., Randy Yow, Rick Helms (wife Brenda), Jeff Helms (wife Nanda); Grandchildren, Benjamin James Cronk and Brooklynn Renee Calkins, as well as numerous grandchildren by marriage.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm at McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe, located at 204 South Main Street, Monroe, North Carolina. Funeral services will then be held at 2:15 pm in the McEwen Colonial Chapel with burial following immediately after at Lakeland Memorial Park.
