Hugh Hall, also known as Carlos, a devoted husband, father, and decorated Vietnam veteran, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2025, at 9:29am at Atrium Main Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina, with his beloved wife Evelyn by his side.
Born in San Jose, Costa Rica, Hugh spent much of his life in Panama City, Panama, before making his home in New York and later North Carolina. Baptized as a Catholic in his early years, he later found spiritual community in a Non-Denominational Church.
Hugh's youth was marked by his exceptional talent for chess, earning numerous awards for his strategic brilliance. He also enjoyed the precision and focus of playing pool. Following his move to Brooklyn, New York, Hugh answered the call to service by joining the military, where he served with distinction in Vietnam. His courage on the battlefield earned him multiple commendations for saving the lives of his fellow soldiers.
Upon returning from military service, Hugh began a successful career at Chase Bank (now JP Morgan Chase), rising to the position of Assistant Vice President before his retirement in 2005. In 2003, Hugh and his wife Evelyn purchased a home in North Carolina, and in 2006, they left Manhattan to settle permanently in their southern retreat.
Hugh leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. He is survived by his devoted spouse, Evelyn Maben-Hall; daughter, Vanessa Kilpatrick; cousins, Herman and Lidia Splatt; niece, Hezena Diahn; and in-laws: Virginia & George Dickerson, Hattie and Alphonso Avery, Melton and Donna Maben, Holly Maben, Dennis & Sheila Payne, Ruth & Kenneth Brown, along with many other relatives and friends who will miss his presence in their lives.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 29, 2025, from 3:00 pm until 4:00 pm at McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe, located at 204 South Main Street, Monroe, North Carolina. A service to celebrate Hugh’s life will follow the visitation at 4:15 pm in the McEwen Colonial Chapel. A funeral repast will be held following the service from 5:30 pm until 7:30 pm at K's Royal Palace, located at 1654 Dickerson Blvd., Suite A&B, Monroe, North Carolina. Burial will be held on Monday, March 31, 2025, at 11:00 am at Salisbury National Cemetery.
