

Mr. Melton was born on August 1, 1937, in Union County, North Carolina, a son of the late Crayton Ray Melton and the late Wincie Corrine Starnes Melton. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Helms Melton; a brother, Reverend Elwin Melton; a sister, Judy Helms Melton; brother in laws; Chester Roscoe (CR) Helms and Butch Cox: and a daughter in law, Wanda Carnes Melton.
Herbert held several occupations and pursued several business endeavors during his life. His measure of success was that he was able to provide for his growing family. Part of his lasting legacy was guiding his children to work hard; to speak and live the truth.
Survivors include a daughter, Wanda Doane and husband David of Monroe; three sons Doug Melton and wife Lisa; and David Melton of Monroe; Billy Melton and wife Bobbi of Troutman. One brother, Jackie Melton and wife Nancy of Monroe; three sisters, Nelda McDonald and husband Paul of Charlotte, Tommie Stegall and husband Walter of Monroe, and Ellen Cox of Monroe; a sister in law, Ora Lee Melton of Winston-Salem.
Six grandchildren; Caleb, Byron, Matthew, Ryan, Tracy and Joseph. Nine great-grandchildren; Ivy, Emily, Joe, Kael, Kimzie, Colton, Trenton, Mary and Elissa.
Mr. Melton believed that “family is everything.”
The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 1:45 PM Wednesday, July 19, 2023, Services will follow at 2:00 PM, both at McEwen Chapel, 204 S. Main Street, Monroe, North Carolina, 28112, officiated by Reverend Charles Hines with reflections & memories from brother; Jackie Melton.
The family acknowledges with great appreciation the loving care provided by both Lake Park Nursing and Rehab Center; Lake Park, NC and Hospice of Union County; Monroe, NC.
