Doug Helms, 80, of Indian Trail passed away Monday, January 24th, 2022, in his warm bed surrounded by loved ones. He was born in Wingate, North Carolina on March 14, 1941 in his grandmother’s house. He is the son of the late Carl Richardson Helms and Florence M. Helms. Doug served in the U.S. Army Reserves for six years. He was a member of the 461 Matthews Masonic Lodge for twenty years, where he served as a Master Mason and as a certified lecturer. For almost fifty years, Doug worked for Ford Motor Company in the parts department.
Doug was a loving husband, a devoted father and step-father, a cherished grandfather, and a noble friend. Though he was quiet in volume, his love was loud and unyielding. He was a gentle and kind man who found joy in making wind chimes and rocking horses for his grandkids, sitting outside in the warm sun, and most of all, serving and leading others to his Almighty God. He was a true servant of the Lord until the very end, and his absence has left a hole for those who had to stay behind.
Doug is survived by his beautiful wife of forty years, Debra Sistare Helms; his brother, Wayne Helms; his sisters, Lorraine Palmer and Ruby Helms; his son, Kevin and daughter, Jatana; his stepsons, Bo (wife, Cindy), Scooter, and Jacob (wife, Joy); his grandchildren, Kristy, Briann, Madison, Joshua, Mikayla, Anna, Noah, Eli, Dalton, Ashtin, Brayden, Addison, Sarah, and Ashley; his great-grandchildren, Lily, Emery, Rayleigh, Mackenzie, and Mason; and his caring nieces, Leah Gutierrez and Shay Piercey.
A funeral service will be held Sunday, January 30, 2022 at McEwen Chapel in Monroe. Visitation will be at 4:00 followed by a service at 5:00 officiated by Reverend Roger Burrows to celebrate Doug’s wonderful life. In lieu of sending flowers, the family asks that memorials be sent to Hospice of Union County.
McEwen Funeral Home is honored to be serving the Helms family.
