Betty was a loving wife, mother, and pistol packing Meme. Born and raised in Charlotte, NC, she married Claudius Alexander (Sonny) Crater in 1950 and had three wonderful children: Kenneth Michael Crater, Pamela Crater Simpson, and Carole Anne Crater. They opened Eastside Grill, where Betty was known as a gastronomic goddess and, when the jukebox was playing, one heck of a dancer. She later worked for Bell’s Linen Closet and Yale Norton.
After retiring, Betty “Meme” became the personal chauffeur to her grandchildren: toting them and their friends from school, to baseball games, and anywhere else they desired. She enjoyed the beach, both for reading and sipping on White Zinfandel, but not necessarily in that order. She was a tough broad–a spitfire–and an excellent shot. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Meme leaves behind her daughter, Pam Simpson, her son-in-law, Dennis Simpson, her daughter-in-law, Wanda Crater, her brothers: Albert Moore and Baxter Moore, her sister, Nancy Isenhower, her grandchildren: Crystal Wade, Erin Elliott, Alex Simpson and Christopher Crater, and her great grandchildren: Cora Elliott, Hayden Elliott, Tucker Wade, Chloe Wade, Sydney Wade and Casen Crater.
Betty will be reunited with her mother, Lilian Lamberth Moore, husband, Claudius Alexander Crater, sister, Ellen Moore, brother, Leon Moore, son, Micheal Crater, and daughter, Carol Anne.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.mcewenmonroechapel.com for the Crater family. A private celebration of Betty’s life will be held by her family. In lieu of flowers please consider donations to St. Jude.
