She was born on April 24, 1933, in Monroe, North Carolina, daughter to the late John R. and Daisy Aldridge Sweatt. Arvie graduated from Union High School in 1951 and was married to her husband, G.B. Courtney for 74 years. She raised her three boys and cared for her grandchildren and many community children whom all loved her dearly. Arvie was always the first one to show up in your time of need, being ready to feed you or do whatever was needed. She has always been well thought of and regarded throughout her community. She was faithful and active in her church, Zoar United Methodist, as well as her local VFD, Lanes Creek. Arvie also had many interests and enjoyments in her life. She was a great cook and baker and was famous for her Chicken & Dumplings and cakes. She was an avid quilter and had made many beautiful quilts over the years. Those who were blessed enough to receive one of her quilts will treasure and cherish them forever. More importantly, Arvie loved her family and enjoyed spending time and making precious memories with them. That love was reciprocated back by her family and friends, and she will be missed very much.
Along with her parents, Arvie is preceded in death by her oldest son, Larry Courtney; and brothers, Johnny Sweatt and Wade Aldridge. She is survived by her loving husband, George Butler Courtney; children, Roger Courtney and Dennis Courtney (Denise); grandchildren, Sonya Sims (Brian), Sundi Gonzales (Grady), Jason Courtney (Leslie), Lori Courtney, Clay Courtney (Casey) and Amanda Tarlton (Jeff); great-grandchildren, Dillon, Macey, Madeline, Oren, and Lawson Courtney, and Luke, Ava, Hannah, Sadie, Della, and Vander Tarlton, Grasun and Gunnar Gonzales, Cami Sims, Courtney Harvell, and Bailey and Brody Tomberlin; great-great-grandchildren, Declan Courtney and Benjamin Harvell; daughter-in-law, Linda Courtney; as well as many nieces and nephews.
