Arlie was born on June 14, 1933, Flag Day, at home in Union County, North Carolina. He was the son of Rossie Lillian (Simpson) and James Ellis Rushing. Arlie passed away peacefully in his sleep surrounded by his family.
Arlie is survived by his wife of 57 years, Doris (Peterson) Rushing, their children, daughter, Patricia Kerley, daughter, Elizabeth Rushing, son, Scott (Kim) Rushing, son, Michael (Jennifer) Rushing, grandchildren Cassandra (Carmin) Hefner, Rusty (Tawny) Kerley, Hannah (Tate Richards) Floyd, Lindsey Brost, Ella Rushing, Madeline Rushing, Aisley Rushing, Lawson Rushing, great grandchildren, Marissa Courtney, Brannon Hefner, Matthew Kerley, Annabelle Kerley, Christopher Kerley, brother, Hoyt (Fay) Rushing and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his father and mother, Ellis and Rossie Rushing, sisters Mildred Kirkland, Verla Kepple, MItchell Callander, Mary Roughton, brothers, James Rushing, Leroy Rushing, and JW Rushing.
Arlie was an avid sportsman at Unionville High School playing basketball, baseball. Was All county Basketball and Junior Legion baseball. Arlie was in numerous clubs during his education. He was a bus driver for the school district. Arlie was an Eagle scout with the Boy Scouts of America and was an Order of the Arrow recipient. He joined the Army and became a drill instructor at Fort Carson, Colorado during the Korean conflict. He transferred into the Army Reserve from active duty. Upon returning to Union County he attended Wingate College but didn’t graduate. He then went into law enforcement as a police officer in Monroe, NC and went to training with the FBI. He later relocated to South Florida and went into construction becoming a General Contractor. Arlie and his family moved back to Union County North Carolina in 1984 and he continued in the construction field. Also during this time he worked for the City of Monroe overseeing the rehabilitation project. He will be remembered by his community involvement in West Palm Beach at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church as a vestry member, Junior Warden, usher and congregant for many years. He was a baseball coach and baseball commissioner for Lake Lytle Recreation Center, active girl scout member and camping advisor for Girl Scout Troop #17. He was an active Jaycee member and inducted into the International Jaycee as a lifetime member. He was an usher, on the vestry, Loaves and Fishes and Junior Warden at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Monroe for many years. He was active in Lions International and was President, Vice-President and Past-President of the Unionville Lions Club.
He was very active in the Fourth of July extravaganza in Unionville and cooked bar-b-que for Unionville Elementary annual Bar-B-Que in November. He was an active member of the Sam F. Keziah American Legion Post #535 and was instrumental in the building committee for their new location off 601. He was a basketball coach during his youngest son, Michael’s education. He was larger than life, loved his family deeply and will be greatly missed. Visitation will be held at McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe on Friday, December 16, 2022 from 4:00pm - 8:00pm. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2022 at 11:00 am at Antioch Baptist Church, 6223 Love Mill Rd, Monroe, NC 28110.
The inurnment will take place at a later date.
