JOHN WILLIAM MULLIN, SR., age 90 of Fairfield (formerly of Stamford, and Yarmouthport, MA) beloved husband of the late Frances Mullin, died on Wednesday, January 2, 2013 with his family by his side. Born in Stamford, on April 13, 1922, he was a son of the late John and Delia Mullin. He is survived by his three children, Tim Mullin of North Oaks, Minnesota, John Mullin, Jr. of Redding, and Eileen Zoppi and her husband Philip of Fairfield; nine grandchildren, Kate, Laura and Jenny Mullin, Julia Rose and Sean Liam Mullin, and Carolyn, MaryKate, Philip and Patrick Zoppi. Other survivors include brother, Gerald Mullin and his wife Dorothy, sister Irene Sirico and her husband John, sister-in-law Dorothy White and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his beloved wife, Frances, he was predeceased by his sisters Jane Stanek, Peg Marcel and Madeline Hoder Fabrizzio.
John’s life work was carpentry and he was an active member of Carpenter’s Local 210 serving as Vice President, before retiring at the age of 66. During the urban redevelopment of Stamford in the 1960’s and 1970’s, John (nicknamed “Moon” by his friends) worked on several of the buildings that now dot the Stamford skyline.
Upon retirement John and Frances relocated to Yarmouthport, Massachusetts where they spent many happy years together. Their children and grandchildren have fond memories of visiting them in Cape Cod and enjoying long summer days at Dennis Pond (“Kiddie Pond”).
John was also a World War II Navy Veteran assigned to the USS Essex (CV-9) in April 1943 and sailed from Norfolk, VA through the Panama Canal to Pearl Harbor. He participated in assaults starting with Marcus Island, Wake Island, Rabaul, Gilbert Islands, Marshall Islands, Truk Islands, Mariana Islands, Palau, Visayan, Okinawa, Leyte Gulf, Luzon, Tarawa, Kwajalein and Iwo Jima until the war was over. He received the Asiatic-Pacific area Campaign Medal, 12 Battle Stars and the World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged on December 6, 1945 as a Petty Officer First Class Radioman. John and Frances enjoyed attending the USS Essex reunions held around the country and made some lasting friendships through the years.
Originally a native of Stamford, John came to love the town of Fairfield. He visited the Fairfield Senior Center daily up until he became ill and enjoyed meeting with his friends there each morning.

Friends and family are welcome to join the celebration of John’s life at his funeral mass to be held on Tuesday, January 22, 11:00 a.m. at St. Bridget Church of Ireland, 278 Strawberry Hill Avenue, Stamford, CT.
