Born in Norwalk, John grew up in Fairfield and enjoyed fishing on the Saugatuck River. He was a member of the CCC’s (Civilian Conservation Corp) prior to him joining the Army (1942-1946). He was stationed in Okinawa as a Signal Corpsman and was an Army Sharpshooter. John received many medals for his accomplishments.
John is survived by his wife, Selvina, his daughters Sally Ann Koczy and Susan Koczy Cornut and her husband, Craig. Three grandchildren Craig Cornut Jr., wife Jaimie, Chase Cornut, wife Cassandra and Todd Cornut. Four great-grandchildren Abigail, Saige and twins, Caroline and Samuel.
John was blessed with the gift of a rewarding 100 plus years filled with love, happiness ad respect for the great outdoors. He enjoyed his huge yearly garden, which at times he felt he shared the fruits and vegetables with the woodchucks, deer, turkeys and other natures’ children. He has honeybees for many years and planted well over 1000 Christmas trees on his property in Monroe. John was not only a gentleman, but a “gentle man”.
John and Selvina built their home together in Monroe and have lived there for over 65 years. After their retirements, John and Selvina drove cross country, twice, seeing all the historical sights along the way. In 1987, Grandfather Semu, a Chumash Medicine Man, acknowledged John as “A Man of the Earth”.
In lieu of flowers, please plant a tree in John’s memory. A suggestion would be Arbor Day Foundation. (www.arborday.org)
